All about Alexandria With a population of approximately 6,000 people, Alexandria is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, situated only four kilometres south of the Sydney CBD. Henderson Road borders the north; Botany Road is to the east; Gardeners Road to the south, while Mitchell Road and Sydney Park borders the west. The name of Alexandria, although used for the surrounding parish, was originally named after Princess Alexandria, wife of King Edward VII. After separating from Waterloo in 1868, the Borough of Alexandria was formed. Alexandria had become the biggest manufacturing district in Australia by 1943, and was known as the “Birmingham of Australia”. Producing everything from bricks to aeroplanes, the 550 factories were spread out over 1000 acres. In 1949, the municipality of Alexandria was ended after it merged into the City of Sydney, together with Glebe, Paddington, Waterloo, Redfern, Newtown, Erskineville and Darlington. Alexandria became a part of a new municipality of South Sydney Council, when boundaries were changed again in 1968. After several other changes, Alexandria shifted back into the City of Sydney in 2004. Having medium to high density residential areas, Alexandria is principally an industrial suburb, which once had terraced housing blocks. These were demolished for warehousing and light industrial use which is still present to this day. Adjoining Waterloo and Erskineville, some quiet residential areas still remain along the northern boundary. In order to meet the community demand for local markets, the South Sydney Markets were established in 2009. These markets provide fine produce, and is a location for local handmade crafts. Situated on the western border of Alexandria is the massive Sydney Park, one of the largest parks in the inner city area, with tennis courts and a cricket oval there is a communal feel and sufficient views of the city horizon.
